May is “National Walking Month”, with Walk to Work Week (13-17 May) and Walk to School Week (20-24 May). Walking is one of the easiest (and cheapest!) ways to improve your health: it improves your fitness levels, and can help to reduce stress levels. Yet, a survey published in December 2012 (National Travel Survey) showed a 24% decline in the number of walking trips per person since the mid-90s. In March 2013, a YouGov poll showed that 40% of gym users drive 2 miles or less to use their gym.
Adding in half an hour a day – or just getting off the bus a stop earlier, will soon make a difference. Here in East Sussex, there are plenty of beautiful walks to choose from: exploring the coastline of the Seven Sisters, wandering round the bluebells at Arlington, braving the breeze along the front at Brighton, Eastbourne or Hastings – or simply getting out and enjoying the countryside. Here’s a couple of links for inspiration to get you out and about. Enjoy!
