How Five Element Acupuncture Can Support Your IVF Journey

How Five Element Acupuncture Can Support Your IVF Journey

IVF can be a transformative fertility treatment, but it can also be a physically and emotionally demanding process. Many people seek complementary therapies to help manage stress and support their bodies through treatment. Five Element Acupuncture has become a trusted option. Whilst nothing guarantees pregnancy, a 2018 meta-analysis cited by the British Acupuncture Council found that acupuncture performed around embryo transfer was associated with a statistically significant improvement in live birth rates for women undergoing IVF or ICSI.

How Acupuncture May Help During IVF

Research suggests several mechanisms by which acupuncture may support IVF:

  • Improved blood flow to reproductive organs: Acupuncture may enhance uterine and ovarian blood flow, which can improve endometrial receptivity and ovarian response.
  • Hormonal regulation: Acupuncture may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, helping to regulate hormones involved in ovulation and implantation.
  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Acupuncture has been shown to lower cortisol levels and promote relaxation, which may positively affect reproductive outcomes.

I’ve had over 15 years of experience supporting individuals and couples through fertility treatment. As a Five Element Acupuncturist and someone who has been through a couple of rounds of IVF myself, I understand that treating the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—is key to maximising your chances of starting (or adding to) a family.

How often should I have acupuncture during my IVF cycle?

Acupuncture is most effective when integrated into the IVF process with a structured plan:

  • 12 weeks before IVF: Weekly sessions to support egg development, regulate cycles, and reduce stress. An egg takes 12 weeks to develop, so starting this far out helps healthy egg development from the beginning. I work with my patients, so that if they are progressing well we can start to space treatments out to two (or even four) weekly.
  • During ovarian stimulation: Normally 1 session per week to support ovarian response and manage side effects.  If necessary, we’ll add in a second session, eg points to help increase womb lining thickness based on the feedback from your scans & blood tests.
  • Before egg collection: A calming session 24–48 hours before retrieval.
  • Before embryo transfer: To support implantation, and help keep you calm and grounded.
  • Two-week wait: Weekly sessions to ease anxiety and support hormonal balance.

Final Thoughts

If you are considering IVF, please think about acupuncture.  With the July 2025 cut by the NHS in East Sussex from 3 cycles on the NHS to one, making sure that you are maximising your chances of success with physical and emotional support makes good sense (I know I’m biased, but patients who have been through the process tell me it was invaluable).  Five Element Acupuncture can help you feel more balanced and supported throughout your IVF journey.
