Yes, there really are some positives of Menopause. Here in the western world, we view the time of transition in a very negative fashion. And, if you’re reading this in the middle of a hot flush, anxiety attack, or brain-fog simply because you’re so damn shattered, I can fully understand that you might be raising an eyebrow. But, here’s the thing – whilst the period of transition from having your periods to no longer having them is happening, other changes, that herald a more positive future, are also going on:
Five Positives of Menopause
- In tribal societies, you are not allowed to be a leader/wise woman until you have been through menopause. It signifies that you have accumulated enough wisdom to now be able to encourage others, make decisions, influence the tribe.
- In Chinese Medicine, the blood that you lost during your periods is thought to bring a creative surge. Many women start a new hobby, take up something they love (or used to love but haven’t had time for). How about trying painting, singing, music, craft, sport…?
- With hormone changes comes change. How many people do you know who have got rid of redundant friendships, relationships, husbands… What a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what you really like and need – and to decide what to keep and what to get rid of.
- Often the Menopause corresponds with children being old enough to be able to start to take care of themselves, freeing up time for you. Yes, this isn’t always without stress, but they do need to learn….
- For those who have suffered gynae problems (endometriosis, fibroids, PMS issues…) – the light is at the end of the tunnel. It may not be an easy journey, but you are nearer the end of it than the start.
Menopause can be the opportunity to start looking after your health: the chance to influence your future. Healthy eating, an exercise program, setting time aside to have fun….
Other societies see menopause as a natural transition, not something to be feared. Wouldn’t it be interesting if we could re frame our mindsets to embrace the positives of menopause?
