How to help your periods naturally

woman suffering from period pain

Have you noticed that your periods have gone a bit – er – bonkers during Lockdown?  I’ve had lots of women getting in touch with me, wondering why their symptoms have got worse. From length of their period and flow, to cramps and PMS.  Most of them would also like to help their periods – or cycle – naturally.

Our bodies react to stress, and your monthly cycle is just one way of showing this.  In fact, in the US, a woman’s cycle is deemed to be one of the key indicators of health – just like blood pressure and heart rate.  It’s no wonder that recent events in the UK – and across the world – have resulted in health issues flaring up.

However, fear not! There’s a lot that you can do with diet, exercise and relaxation techniques to return to normal – or even find a new, improved normal:

5 things you can do to help your natural cycle

  1. Track it. Knowledge is power – and can help you understand, and be more understanding and supportive to yourself.  For example, if you realise that on day 18, you often feel low – then instead of beating yourself up about it next month, you’ll be able to plan a treat, or something to look after yourself or distract you.
  2. Eat regularly.  You wouldn’t run your car without fuel… make sure that you eat regular, healthy meals.
  3. Drink water.  In Chinese Medicine, this is considered the single most important thing that you can do for your health.  Not only does it hydrate your organs, but it can affect the channels of energy than run throughout your body.  Most people should aim for 1.5 – 2L per day (depending on your build)
  4. Make a mental note of your emotions.  If you’ve been struggling with anxiety, stress, anger, grief, frustration… firstly, you’re not alone. Secondly, be aware that they all have an impact on our bodies. I often speak to women whose cycle hasn’t been the same since they encountered loss, or had to deal with a lot of stress.  Do what you can to work your way through emotions that are hanging over you.
  5. Find time to relax.  It sounds so simple, particularly when many of us are running round looking after others…. but listening to your body, nourishing yourself, taking a bit of time out every day to do something that is just for you is great.  It sends a signal to your body that you care.
Hopefully the above steps will help you help your periods naturally.  I’m currently offering virtual consultations, specifically aimed at helping women manage their health, to improve menstrual cycles and gynae issues. Please get in touch if you’d like to know more.
